LOL, very good, not a great day is it, I told him that the card will lock itself if he uses a cheap card, I think he sees the card like a phone card and needing a password to protect it, I don't know I have never had one with a card, I cant stand them, I have watched phones turn all my kids into zombies, but I like the pink pony and a unicorn, my granddaughter would love that. Data stored in the Protected Area is inaccessible through the SD card's file system, but any CPRM-enabled device reading the SD card can use it for content protection operations. Basically I have an SD card with some data on it that is fixed to that. Very little info is available about CPRM Protection as used on SD cards. MarkR wrote:No, it can just prompt for the keys on boot. This is, as I've noted, vulnerable to the 'evil maid' attack, but it will prevent someone getting the contents of the root fs if they simply steal the sd card. This also raises the question, _where_ would it be asking for a password, exactly? There is no requirement for a Pi to have either a keyboard or screen attached, and either could be be connected in a number of ways.Boot and load an initial ramdisk from an unencrypted card (or USB stick or netboot it), insert the password protected sdcard, unlock the sdcard password, then pivot root to the sdcard. RaTTuS wrote:well you can use that technique to boot from a minimal sdcard image to ask for the password for the rest of the system which is on either a real HD, another sdcard in an adapter, or a real HD [or image over the internet]The point of using the password feature of the sdcard is so the encryption is offloaded onto the card itself rather than slowing the Pi. AFAIK, the password feature has nothing to do with encryption on SD cards, it only prevents reading/writing (otherwise changing the password would be a time-consuming process as the card would have to decrypt and then re-encrypt the entire card). SD cards are capable of DRM encryption/decryption but that's via CPRM data stored in the protected area of the cards.
